Scaling to Grow Impact

To scale a program has often meant expanding work to serve a larger local population, or replicating the program in another community. A different approach is to look at scaling not in terms of size or reach, but in terms of impact. That is what Grantmakers for Effective Organizations does in an article titled “What Do We Mean By Scale?” as part of their “Scaling What Works” initiative. They examine several types of nonprofit work that can be scaled, and what grantmakers can do to support a nonprofit’s effort to grow or scale social impact.
