Year I joined IP: 2018
What I bring to IP: Through my experience working at nonprofits in a range of fields – education, housing, advocacy, and mental health – I have seen firsthand the positive outcomes that can be achieved when donors select grantees with alignment to their vision and the capacity to realize their intended impact. My background as a teacher and a social worker has given me a window into the grantee perspective and an understanding of how different issue areas are interrelated. I have a BS in neuroscience from the University of Miami and an MSW from Washington University in St. Louis.
What I love most about my work: I love the variety of issues and perspectives that I’m exposed to. Through the foundations I work with, I’ve been able to explore topics ranging from climate change to early childhood education to workforce development. I enjoy getting to know different funders and helping them leverage their strengths to create meaningful impact for communities.
What I am most excited about learning right now: I’m excited to think about how to engage more deeply in trust-based philanthropy. I believe that developing relationships based on transparency and mutual learning can help both funders and grantees be more effective in their work, which will ultimately lead to greater impact for the community.
What I do in a typical week: No two weeks look quite the same, but they all include two things I love doing: working with data and building relationships. Depending on the week, I may be conducting research to support strategy development, thinking about how to create more effective systems and processes, or learning about the priorities of board members and grantees.
What I do when I’m not working: I hike, garden, and go on picnics when the weather is nice. Recently, I have had a lot of fun testing out new flavors in my ice cream maker.
What my coworkers say about me: Kate is a wiz when it comes to research, operations, and strategy. She consistently produces high-quality, thoughtful work. She has a strong, yet gentle way of engaging with clients and staff and is highly capable of conquering every challenge thrown at her.
