Kinyta Smalls
Director
Year I joined IP: 2020
What I bring to IP: I am a lifelong learner, educator, and agent of change, bringing over 15 years of experience in bilingual education, a brief stint in mortgages and student loans, and over 25 years of mentorship and non-profit service through ministry and community service. Most recently, I worked in elementary education, developing departments dedicated to supporting English-language learners in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey schools. I became closely involved with all aspects of program development and training from the central office to the classroom, as well as in what became a new favorite thing: working with the local community and parents. I bring this passion for leveraging community partners and empowering local stakeholders to my current work at IP, and in particular to my role as Executive Director, Puerto Rico of the Peter Alfond Foundation. The Foundation’s goal to positively impact issues surrounding education and wellness give me a unique opportunity to work with local talent and community centered interests in Puerto Rico.
What I love most about my work: I love the challenge to consistently provide our clients with excellent work that is informed by a local context. IP’s’ team comprised of talented and thoughtful individuals support and challenge me to be consistent and thorough in this pursuit. At IP, the work of the team truly does add up to a quality body of work that is greater than each individual’s talent. Another aspect of the work that I enjoy is the opportunity to support the ideas and efforts of many Puerto Ricans investing in more equitable and sustainable practices that will improve upon the existing strengths and resources of the island and culture.
What I am most excited about learning right now: How the different leaders of social justice causes on the island of Puerto Rico bring to bear their communities’ assets in tackling complex challenges…oh, and how to sustain a high alkaline diet, while still having room for the occasional piece of fried chicken, pernil, or arroz con gandules.
What I do when I’m not working: Take long scenic walks; ride bikes with my husband; sit, read and think with a good cup of coffee in hand; reconnect with my family and former neighborhoods and friends in Puerto Rico; cook, and dance!
What my coworkers say about me: Kinyta has a knack for asking just the right question at just the right time. She is confident in her deep expertise yet humble in exploring new topics. Her work ethic and passion allow her to dive into any complex issue and resurface on the other side with digestible, actionable recommendations.
